Like artillery finally having an ammunition limit. The fact that we were charged another $50 for it was insulting IMO. Napoleon was frankly the game Empire should have been. Mods like Stainless Steel, Broken Crescent, Third Age, etc are impossible. In general, the Warscape engine (I think that's what it is called) was a step back in one major regard: the lack of modding capability. What diplomacy remained comprised mostly of trading war material, units and other war-related things. HoI3 doesn't have good AI or diplomacy either, once you join one of the three power groups you are forcefully stuck with it. When I want a campaign, I play PDS games. Overall, when I want to play real time tactical battles and see thousands of soldiers up close in a battle, I'd play Total War. They managed to somehow make Shogun II great and Napoleon decent, but that's it. And then they came crashing down with Empire once they switched to this horrible engine. Then they damaged the games with Rome Total War especially in AI and historical accuracy, but the game became awesome with patches and mods. Their first two games were masterpieces I'd say, both had great AI too, the only weakness was the campaign and diplomacy. The one before it (Napoleon) was also good enough. Their last game (Rome II) was a train wreck, but the one before it (Shogun II) was a heavily polished masterpiece, and had a nice AI. Honestly speaking, I don't get this TW hate. Total War allows the tactical battles, which HoI doesn't have

Personally, I prefer the PDS titles by some margin, but if your interest is more on the individual battles than the strategic picture, then the TW series is the one to go for.

That said, HoI's 'tactical' AI has its soft points, which can make the game a little easy in SP if you don't limit yourself a bit to not take advantage of its weaknesses, but it's still a great game (and we're all hoping for an AI with less weaknesses in HoI4 - they made big steps forward in CK2 and EU4, so this is a reasonable expectation).īoth are very enjoyable games for what they are, but they're very different types of strategy games. HoI (and EU/CK/MOTE) focus entirely on the strategic side, and it's a lot more detailed and involved, with a more complex AI to play against. The last TW game I played was Shogun 2 (which is good fun), and the AI in the tactical battles is improving, but it does get a little easy to regularly roll over the top of larger forces. Pretty much what everyone else has said - the TW games do a reasonable job of having enjoyable tactical battles with a historical flavour, but their strategic game is pretty simple and the AI for the strategic game is (relative to Paradox titles) basic.
